Substance Abuse Directory Released

LEXINGTON, KY (10/15/11) − Research at the University of Kentucky has determined there are over 2,500 substance abuse treatment resources in Kentucky for abusers as well as support services for families. Now, for the first time, a comprehensive directory of information on these resources is available in one place. The 2011 Kentucky Substance Abuse Treatment Provider Directory, which includes at least one resource in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties, is a collaborative effort between the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, which funded the project, the University of Kentucky College of Communications and Information Studies, and the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER), which is located in UK's Gatton College of Business and Economics.

Substance Abuse on the Rise Among Baby Boomers

WERNERSVILLE, Pa., Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The need for substance abuse treatment services for older Americans is expected to double by 2020, according to experts at The Hanley Center, a Caron Treatment Center. The prediction comes on the heels of a recent study sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showing that the rate of illicit drug use among 50 to 59 year-olds has increased 3.1 percent in the past eight years. Hanley, a nationally recognized non-profit provider of alcohol and drug addiction treatment, asserts that this increase in substance abuse among Baby Boomers poses many challenges for individuals, families and society.

Alcohol Abuse And Sexual Orientation Affect The Use Of Substance Abuse Treatment In People With HIV

Results of a recent study indicate that individuals with HIV who have alcohol dependence problems or who identify themselves as bisexual, gay, or lesbian are less likely to seek treatment for substance abuse problems. However, individuals co-infected with hepatitis C and individuals who reported past physical or sexual abuse were more likely to seek substance abuse treatment. The authors of the study suggested that doctors and health care providers develop more effective substance abuse treatment programs and motivate their HIV-positive patients to use these programs.
